Florence and the Machine have released a dark and dancey new single, “Mermaids,” as part of their Dance Fever universe.

The song was produced by Dave Bayley and features Florence Welch singing about the grey English weather, Britney Spears, and “cheerful oblivion.” The track is a darkly layered pop tune with a propulsive synth beat.

Teasing the New Song on Social Media

The band teased the new song with several Instagram posts, including one of Welch in a bathtub wearing a mermaid tail and vampire teeth.

The short clips that appeared on Instagram are believed to be from a music video for the track.

A series of posts revealed edited-together clips from mermaid-themed horror films, the single’s artwork, and a video of Welch lip-syncing to the single’s lyrics in front of an English gray and green backdrop.

The song was produced by Dave Bayley and features Florence Welch singing about the grey English weather, Britney Spears, and “cheerful oblivion.” The track is a darkly layered pop tune with a propulsive synth beat.

Deluxe Edition of Dance Fever and Mermaid Love

“Mermaids” is featured in a newly released deluxe edition of Dance Fever.

The song was written and produced by Welch and Bayley while Welch was recovering from a broken foot sustained during the Dance Fever Tour.

Florence Welch has been open about her love for mermaids, even performing a portion of “Part of Your World” during a 2011 video interview with Elle and referring to singing the song as her “dream.”

Florence and the Machine’s Recent Collaborations

In December, Welch and Co collaborated with rising singer-songwriter Ethel Cain on a new rendition of “Morning Elvis,” the closing track from Dance Fever.

The pair recorded the new version live during a Denver concert. Florence and the Machine also recently shared a cover of No Doubt’s “I’m Just a Girl” for the soundtrack of Showtime’s Yellowjackets.

Welch expressed her excitement in reinterpreting the song in a “deeply unsettling” way for the show, adding horror elements to fit the tone of the series.

Contributions to Soundtracks and Future Speculations

Florence and the Machine’s music has been featured in various soundtracks, including their iconic 2009 hit “Dog Days Are Over” being used for the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

While some fans have speculated whether “Mermaids” is related to the upcoming Little Mermaid, it’s clear that Welch has had a long-standing fascination with mermaids.

With this new release, it wouldn’t be surprising if Florence and the Machine contribute to more soundtracks in the future.
